Deportations as Mass Repressions against Humanity from History to the Present. Historical and Socio-Anthropological Aspects
The report is dedicated to the issue of mass deportations as a war crime, which is being carried out against Ukrainians through the forced transfer of people to the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.
This criminal practice is not new and has been ongoing since the times of the USSR. According to researchers’ estimates, during the Soviet period, around 6 million individuals were deported. These were Ukrainians, Poles, Crimean Tatars, Germans, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, and Greeks.
After the full-scale invasion of Russian forces into Ukraine in February 2022, approximately 2.8 million individuals have already been illegally transferred, including children.
All of these mass repressions have tragic demographic consequences and negatively impact the psychological, economic, and ecological aspects of the populations of the lands from which these people were forcibly deported. This report has been created with the aim of thoroughly addressing this issue, and illustrating the scale of the tragedy of the forced deportation of Ukrainian citizens to the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.
